I love giving gifts anytime of the year, but right now my mind is on my holiday gift shopping. The time is flying by on my calendar and I haven’t even started my list, let alone checked it twice! This could produce a lot of anxiety and stress…..so much to do……no time…..how will I ever get it done? That negative self talk doesn’t feel good at all, so I’ve got a secret weapon. I have a song to change my tune. Let me explain.
A year ago I was at a conference in Florida. There were about thirty of us. We were there to present our creative ideas to a panel of judges. It was a shark-tank type of thing. As my time to present was approaching I was getting more and more anxious. It seemed like everyone going before me was a seasoned public speaker. I was out of my comfort zone and my confidence was slipping away. Another lady in our group, Ruth Wishengrad, had made her presentation earlier in the day. She sang a few songs she had written and put movements together with the music. She explained that the songs were simple little affirmations that could help others feel positive and empowered. Everyone in the room loved her performance. During a break just prior to my allotted time I asked Ruth if she could sing me a song to boost my confidence. She took my hand and led me out of the room. As we walked briskly down the hall, swinging our arms, she’d sing a line and have me repeat it. “I can do it, yes I can do it. I think I can. I know I can. I can do it, yes I can do it. I know I can. I really can!” It was so playful and uplifting. I walked back in and rocked the presentation! One of the judges said he didn’t get what I was trying to achieve when I presented six months earlier, but he really “got it” that time. I had to give credit to Ruth for her part in my elevated self-esteem and clarity.
“Ruth is a true believer that if you feel it in your body, you will feel it in your life. Sometimes we need to physically act our way into the positive mindset that we desire, rather than thinking our way into it. Songs to Change Your Tune™ are unique in that they combine visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities to fully activate every fiber of your being.”
I thought back to the time when our daughter, Brittany, was small. I was trying to help her with her schoolwork in second grade. She just wasn’t getting it and she said, “I learn differently than everybody else, Mom.” As the years went on, Britt was confident in most areas of her life but school continued to be a challenge for her. She said going to school was like her worst nightmare coming true everyday. That breaks a parent’s heart! When she crossed the threshold at school, her confidence plummeted. She felt stupid. I did everything I could do to find help to make it easier for her. Her learning disability was difficult to identify. Someone once explained it like a “sticky bucket”; she stored the information in her brain but she couldn’t easily retrieve it. Yet, Britt could memorize every song on the radio and she was the one teaching her friends all of the new dance steps. Hmmm, I wonder if her experience at school would have been a completely different one if she hadn’t already felt defeated in grade school? What if she had been able to hum a little song in her mind to boost her confidence and encourage her to try again? Would that have given her the desire to repeat her lessons over and over instead of throwing in the towel because she was “stupid”. What if we could have figured out how to use the visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities to make learning enjoyable for Brittany? I don’t know the answers to those questions, but my gut says it could have been a better experience if I knew then what I know now.
What I know now is that we have the ability to choose how we feel, but we have to possess some tricks in our mind to flip the switch from negative to positive. I know that affirmations are positive statements which, when given to your subconscious mind repeatedly can alter any old habits or conditioning. I know self talk, good or bad, becomes your belief. I know that what becomes a person’s reality, their firm beliefs, are developed by the time they are seven years old and that it’s so much easier to program the “good stuff” during those early years than it is to change those perceptions as adults. I know that Songs to Change Your Tune are something special and I believe that every grade school classroom and home should have them!
“Songs to Change Your Tune™ provide children, of all ages, meaningful tools to build strong self-concept, self-respect and self-esteem through their fun, infectious melodies and rhythms. They are for the kid in all of us! It’s only natural for occasional negative thoughts to loop in our head over and over again. Songs to Change Your Tune™ flush out the negative thoughts with upbeat music and replace them with repeating positive messages. Research has proven that singing changes your brain and improves your well-being. Songs To Change Your Tune™ can help you and your child get happy and healthy!”
Thanks to Ruth Wishengrad, when I need to shift my thoughts from from those that are feeling difficult to “I’ve got this”, I just hum a little tune in my head. “I can do it, yes I can do it. I think I can. I know I can.”! By the way, that idea I presented in Florida was for this website. “I know I can, I really can”. I did! Consider this holiday shopping done. I can do it and I will!
I bought Ruth’s cd that day. Since then I’ve bought them for about every little person I know! This might make your gift shopping a little easier, too! Please visit Ruth’s website. The link is below. There’s a combination package of her CD and DVD that is a “perfect self-esteem package: listen to the CD in the car and sing and dance to the DVD at home”. The greatest gifts we can share with our children is the love and encouragement that builds their self-confidence and their deep belief they can try anything, do anything and achieve any goal their heart desires. Let’s replace “I can’t” with I CAN do it! I’m humming that song again
